Why look for free alternatives to Notion AI?

Notion AI is priced as an add-on, and that is the detail most comparisons skip. The $10/month sits on top of a Notion subscription you must already be paying for, so the real question is never "is Notion AI worth $10" but "is Notion plus Notion AI worth the combined total". Its genuine advantage is context: it edits inside the note you are already writing and can work against your own databases, which saves constant copy-pasting. What it is not is a better model than the free general-purpose assistants — you are paying for placement, not capability.

How much does Notion AI cost?

Notion AI adds $10/month to an existing Notion plan, and the free allowance is 20 AI responses before it stops. Set against that, Coda Free gives unlimited docs, Obsidian is unlimited and stores everything locally on your machine, and AppFlowy, Anytype and Logseq are open source and free outright. None of them bundle an AI that lives inside the editor, but pairing any of them with a free assistant in a browser tab reproduces most of the workflow for nothing.

Our verdict

If you already pay for Notion and genuinely do most of your work inside it, the add-on saves real time and the in-context editing is the part people actually miss when they leave. For everyone else it is difficult to justify, because the capability you are buying is available free elsewhere and the convenience only pays off at high daily usage. Coda Free is the closest all-in-one substitute; Obsidian plus a free AI assistant is the better choice if you want your notes stored locally and under your control.
